All this talk about horror-romance makes me wanna read some good horror stories.
Anyone got some suggestions?
I wanna be terrified
Also, if anyone got some good horror mpvies suggestions, I’d appreciate that too.
Going off book for a post here because horror (obviously) does not have a guaranteed happy ending.
If you want a little romance with your terror, try The Stand, 11/22/63 or The Green Mile from Stephen King. I can’t remember what happens with the love story in The Stand, but I know things don’t end with the people happily together in 11/22/63 or The Green Mile. I’d still call the endings satisfying or suitable though. King doesn’t really do “and then everything continued to be horrible” endings, there’s generally an optimistic feeling, even if it’s understood to be momentary.
For creeping dread, go for Shirley Jackson. Read We Have Always Lived in the Castle and The Haunting of Hill House.
For straight up scary, I loved Bird Box by Josh Malerman and The Ruins by Scott Smith.
One of my favorite horror movies is In the Mouth of Madness. A Quiet Place was pretty damn good. The Shining is a classic. The latest version of IT was solid. Hereditary was fantastic. And Get Out is absolutely mandatory viewing.
I agree with all of @respectingromance‘s suggestions! Especially Shirley Jackson and Bird Box.
I also want to recommend:
My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. Beaches meets The Exorcist, in the best kind of ways.
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero. Lovecraftian Scooby Doo.
